Embryo adoption is the process of transferring a frozen embryo that has resulted from egg donation to an “adopting” woman.
Embryo Adoption. Is it for me?
What is embryo adoption?
How embryos become available for donation?
During an egg donation cycle for an infertile couple there are often surplus embryos that are not used. These embryos then become available for “embryo adoption”.
What is the quality of these embryos?
These embryos are of excellent quality (Grade AA Blastocysts). The reason for that is that they were created from proven young egg and sperm donors.
How does the matching process works?
As these embryos are already created, the couple considering embryo adoption has to consider that only basic characteristics can be matched with them (ie hair and eye colour, skin colour etc) and although it cannot be as detailed as if the embryos were made specifically for them (as in egg donation) it’s a very good alternative.
Why embryo adoption and not egg donation?
There are many reasons, egg donation requires finding a suitable donor and hence can be time consuming, it requires using medication in order to coordinate the cycle of the patient to that of the donor (down-regulation), it takes longer and costs considerably more. All these make embryo adoption a very attractive alternative.
Success rate?
The embryos that are used in embryo adoption are derived from proven egg and sperm donors and hence are of top quality. Provided there are no “uterine” issues clinical pregnancy rate exceeds 50 % and live birth rate is in the region of 35-40% per embryo transferred.
What is the process ?
The process is extremely straightforward making embryo donation ideal for all patients including those traveling to Greece for their treatment. All necessary tests (ultrasound, aqua-scan etc will be done in your home country or locally for Greek patients). You will only need to have medication for your lining preparation (estrogen and progesterone plus some additional support medication and vitamins). For international patients you will have to be in Greece for 1-2 days maximum and then you can fly straight back home.
